Germany develops new robotic system to recover and repurpose EV battery cells

German researchers have launched RoB@t2Cell to automate EV battery pack dismantling, cell testing, and controlled discharge.

The system is being developed by Fraunhofer IPA with partners and funded by Germany’s research ministry, with pilot testing at Umicore.

By sorting cells for reuse, remanufacturing, or recycling, it could cut waste and recover more valuable materials.

The project may help Europe scale safer, regulation-compliant EV battery recovery under the EU Battery Regulation.
