Kaspersky warns that passwords hashed with MD5 algorithm can be cracked in minutes using a GPU

Kaspersky says leaked MD5-hashed passwords are now crackable in minutes with a GeForce RTX 5090-class GPU.

In its tests, 60% of passwords fell in under an hour and 48% in under 60 seconds.

The company says MD5 is too weak for password storage and recommends bcrypt or Argon2 instead.

It also urges multi-factor authentication or passkeys to reduce account compromise risk.
