Low-cost fabric panels warm buildings, slash heating energy use up to 23%

Researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst developed removable fabric panels coated with a photothermal dye to capture sunlight and produce heat.

Modeling shows the panels can raise indoor temperatures by up to 8.64°F and cut heating energy use up to 15% in homes and 23% in larger apartment buildings.

The team tested low-cost materials such as durable umbrella fabric and designed the panels to be lightweight and removable for renters and seasonal use.

The researchers say full-scale real-world trials are needed to confirm durability, weather resistance, and long-term energy savings before commercialization.
