OpenAI may design its own chip for an AI-first smartphone

OpenAI is reportedly working with Qualcomm and MediaTek on a custom smartphone chip for an AI-first phone.

Luxshare is said to be the expected manufacturer, with design specs due in late 2026 or early 2027.

The chip could give OpenAI tighter hardware-software control for AI agents, on-device AI, and subscription services.

If successful, the move could position OpenAI as a new challenger to Apple and Google in next-generation smartphones.
