Sicily has a very different problem from tourism: doped horse races with mafia Kalashnikov rifles

A recent video near Palagonia put Sicily’s clandestine horse races back in the spotlight.

The events are allegedly run by mafia networks with motorcycle escorts, shots fired in the air, doped horses, and illegal betting.

Police have carried out raids and questioned dozens of people, but the activity continues.

Beyond animal abuse and gambling, the races help organized crime move cash, intimidate neighborhoods, and display power with limited judicial response.
