Australia Turns Into Bright-Red Vision of Hell

Tropical cyclone Narelle made landfall across three Australian states and territories—the first storm in more than 20 years to do so.

Narelle battered over 3,400 miles of Australia’s northern coast with gale-force winds and heavy rain.

Before landfall the sky turned a vivid bright red; videos of the red sky circulated online.

AccuWeather said the footage was not a filter, and a Facebook post claimed the clips were not doctored.

NOAA NESDIS says iron-rich rocks in northwestern Australia oxidize and produce a reddish hue; strong winds can whip dust into the atmosphere, and Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Angus Hines told ABC News that rust contributes to the red color.
