Scientists say a giant cloud anomaly on Venus was caused by the largest known hydraulic jump in the solar system.

Using Akatsuki observations, researchers traced the event to turbulence in Venus’s lower atmosphere.

The jump forced material upward into the planet’s upper sulfuric acid cloud layer, creating the unusual cloud bank.

The finding helps explain a long-mysterious Venus feature and sheds light on atmospheric dynamics on other worlds.
