Anniversary: Super Mario First Went 'New' 20 Years Ago On The DS

Nintendo marked 20 years since New Super Mario Bros. launched on the DS in the US, revisiting its debut as the first new side-scrolling Mario platformer in years.

The game blended classic 2D Mario action with new touches like the Mega Mushroom, plus multiplayer minigames that broadened its appeal.

New Super Mario Bros. went on to become the DS’s best-selling game, helped revive 2D Mario for a new handheld audience, and launched the long-running “New” subseries.
