Under Trump, NIH Funding Opportunity Notices Dropped From 787 To 84

The number of NIH Notices of Funding Opportunities fell to 84 in the first 13 months of the Trump administration, down from 787 in 2024.

NIH listed 323 grant opportunities as forecasted and funded 22% fewer grants than in previous years.

NIH said the drop reflected a 43-day federal shutdown and streamlining efforts, while internal changes now require NOFO approval by the NIH director’s office and HHS.
