Amazon’s new satellite network for mobile phones could turn up the heat on SpaceX

Amazon has asked the FCC to approve a 5,105-satellite network for direct mobile-phone connectivity, with launches targeted for 2028.

The plan leverages Amazon’s Globalstar spectrum deal and Project Leo broadband network to build a broader space-based telecom offering.

If successful, Amazon would become a major new rival to SpaceX in satellite-to-phone service, a market now led by Elon Musk’s company.

Amazon still faces launch risks because Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket is grounded, but its deep pockets let it keep investing.
