WebAssembly is now outperforming containers at the edge

WebAssembly is positioned to replace containers at the edge if its Component Model is finalized.

Luke Wagner of Fastly said Preview 3 will add concurrency features like async functions, strings, and futures.

Planned Component Model 1.0 features include a lazy memory API, multi-value returns, error context, and optional GC support.

Tools like JCO let components run in browsers today while the community is asked to contribute tooling and docs.
