Engineers develop new magnetic system for wirelessly charging electric ships at sea

SINTEF and shipbuilder Vard have developed an inductive charging system for electric ships at sea.

The Ocean Charger uses encapsulated magnetic coils instead of metal plugs, helping avoid saltwater corrosion and maintenance issues.

The system is designed for harsh offshore conditions, so vessels can recharge directly where they work.

It could make electric operations more practical for service and supply ships, supporting cleaner maritime transport and lower costs.
