One in Five at Risk: Scientists Identify a Hidden Blood Particle Linked to Higher Risk of Stroke and Death

Analysis of more than 20,000 participants from three NIH trials found high lipoprotein(a), or Lp(a), is linked to greater risk of major cardiovascular events, stroke, and cardiovascular death.

The risk was strongest in people with existing heart disease, suggesting Lp(a) can expose hidden residual risk even after standard treatment.

Because routine cholesterol tests often miss this inherited factor, a simple blood test for Lp(a) could help identify patients who need earlier prevention.
