Users turn to jailbreaking their older Kindles as Amazon ends support

Amazon will end technical support for several first- through fifth-generation Kindles and early Kindle Fire models on May 20.

After that date, those devices will only be able to read content already downloaded locally.

The cutoff is pushing some owners to jailbreak their Kindles to install custom fonts, apps, and tools like KOReader and KUAL.

The move highlights the limits of hardware/software lock-in and may lead users to replace older devices.
