China builds automated coal-chemical hub in Xinjiang to reduce oil reliance

China is expanding a highly automated coal-to-chemicals hub in Xinjiang’s Zhundong zone to strengthen domestic supply chains and reduce reliance on imported oil.

The complex uses autonomous haul trucks, on-site processing, and ultra-high-voltage power transmission to support production of chemicals, aluminum, and solar materials.

The project highlights Beijing’s push to build energy and industrial resilience after global oil supply shocks.

It is also drawing concern because coal-heavy development in an arid region could intensify water stress and environmental damage.
