A new compound that blocks mitochondrial magnesium transport helped mice resist obesity and metabolic damage on a Western diet.

In mice, limiting magnesium entry into mitochondria by deleting MRS2 or using CPACC kept weight gain down and improved glucose and fat metabolism.

The treatment also prevented fatty liver, fibrosis, and even liver tumors in long-term high-fat, high-sugar feeding.

The findings point to a potential new strategy for obesity and liver disease that targets mitochondrial magnesium handling rather than appetite or calorie intake.
