MIT Expert Warns Courts “Will Basically Have to Grind to a Halt” as They’re Overwhelmed by AI-Generated Lawsuits

MIT and USC researchers say self-filed lawsuits rose from a long-term average of 11% to nearly 17% by late 2025.

They link the jump to cheap, widely available AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, which make it easier to draft and file claims.

MIT’s Anand Shah warned that if courts cannot absorb the added volume, the legal system could slow or stall.

The trend could mean more pro se cases, longer backlogs, and higher strain on already overburdened courts.
