The Artemis II moon mission is special, and so is the astronauts’ toilet

Artemis II is NASA’s first crewed lunar flyby in over 50 years and will test a new toilet system on a crewed moon mission.

The mission will carry a modified Universal Waste Management System (UWMS) inside Orion to replace Apollo-era waste methods.

The UWMS was developed by Collins Aerospace starting in 2015 and a variant was tested on the ISS in 2020 with installation in 2021.

The system supports simultaneous urine and feces collection, includes handles for microgravity stability, and provides a privacy door.
