Mysterious 164-foot underground tunnel uncovered in Jerusalem stuns archaeologists

Archaeologists near Kibbutz Ramat Rachel in Jerusalem uncovered a 164-foot rock-cut tunnel during pre-construction work.

The passage has collapsed sections and its purpose is still unclear: it may have been for water, quarrying, industry, or never finished.

Experts from the Israel Antiquities Authority say the find could help explain ancient engineering and land use in Jerusalem.

For now, the tunnel’s date and function remain an unresolved archaeological mystery.
