Ubuntu is adding AI features, and it's on a collision course with its own user base

Canonical plans to add AI-powered features to Ubuntu, starting with accessibility tools and troubleshooting automation.

The company says it will prefer open-weight models where possible and keep the features optional.

Users can remove individual AI components via Snaps, but there will be no single switch to disable all AI at once.

The move could make AI a normal part of a major Linux desktop, while testing how much users will accept.
