OpenAI offers ChatGPT free to 100,000 researchers, including in Japan

OpenAI launched “ChatGPT for Academic Researchers,” a free program for scientists in science, math, and engineering.

The rollout starts this summer with 10,000 researchers and is planned to expand to 100,000 by 2027, including Japan.

Eligible users will get access to ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, Codex, GPT-5.6 models, expanded deep research, and life-science skills.

Participants must verify their institution and declare their research area.
