GPT-5.6 Has Been Confirmed to Optimize Itself, and a New “Standing on One Foot by Stepping on the Other” Has Appeared

OpenAI says GPT-5.6 is now being used in real production systems to analyze traffic, improve request routing, and rewrite low-level kernels.

The company also tuned speculative decoding and deployment settings, cutting end-to-end service cost by about 20% and improving token generation efficiency by more than 15%.

Humans still control permissions, goals, and deployment decisions, so the model is assisting optimization rather than running it autonomously.

The report is an early sign that AI can help improve the infrastructure that powers it, hinting at recursive self-improvement and lower compute costs.
