NASA Satellite Captures First-Ever High-Res View of Massive Pacific Tsunami

NASA’s SWOT satellite captured the first high-resolution space-based view of a major Pacific tsunami after an M8.8 quake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula.

By combining SWOT data with DART buoy measurements, researchers found the tsunami spread and scattered more than expected.

The findings suggest current tsunami models may miss important dispersive effects, especially for waves traveling across the Pacific.

That could improve tsunami forecasting and coastal hazard assessments by making simulations more realistic.
