Warning: Instagram DMs Lose End-to-End Encryption Starting Today

Meta has removed Instagram’s opt-in end-to-end encryption for direct messages, reversing a privacy feature added in 2023.

The company said few users had enabled it and notified encrypted-chat users about saving their data before the change.

WhatsApp and Messenger still support end-to-end encryption, but Instagram DMs now offer weaker privacy protections.

The move could give Meta broader access to message content for moderation, legal compliance, advertising, and AI development.
