Ookla Manila study: carrier VoLTE networks outperform OTT apps in voice quality and stability

Ookla’s Manila study found that VoLTE calls on Smart, Globe, and DITO consistently delivered better voice quality and reliability than OTT voice apps.

VoLTE kept HD audio and showed lower drop and failed-call rates, even in weak-signal or congested conditions.

OTT voice services such as WhatsApp degraded more under packet loss, congestion, and limited coverage.

The findings reinforce VoLTE as the stronger standard as the Philippines moves toward 3G shutdown and broader voice modernization.
