Every time a megaship arrives at a port, the power grid collapses. An alternative already exists and doesn’t need cables to the city

A UK-backed consortium led by ELIRE Maritime has validated a floating, off-grid hydrogen power platform for ports.

The modular system combines fuel cells, solar panels, and battery storage to deliver up to 5 MW of shore power to ships.

It passed six months of stability and electrical testing, showing it can work as a movable alternative to fixed port grid upgrades.

The concept could help ports cut berth emissions faster, especially where land-based electrical capacity is limited.
