OpenAI researchers explain why math is the road to AGI

OpenAI researchers say math has become a key benchmark for AGI because it tests long-form, error-resistant reasoning and verifiable proof.

Sebastian Bubeck and Ernest Ryu said LLMs have moved from basic arithmetic to research-level math in about two years.

They cited examples such as solving an old optimization problem and generating new, publication-worthy results.

The researchers also described efforts toward an automated researcher, while warning that these tools still require trained experts to use reliably.
