Physicists Built a Spacetime Crystal – And Then Watched It Melt

Researchers at Shanghai Jiao Tong University watched a tabletop spacetime crystal analog melt for the first time.

Using vibrating plastic disks, they saw time and space order break down in three stages as particle density fell.

The system passed through intermediate fluid-time-crystal and fluid-hexatic states before losing all ordered structure.

The result offers a direct look at how spacetime crystals become unstable and may help explain phase transitions.
