Microsoft may be starting to cancel Claude Code licenses used for in-house development

Microsoft is reportedly cutting most internal Claude Code licenses and steering developers toward GitHub Copilot CLI.

The change appears strongest in the Experiences+Devices division, with standardization on Copilot CLI cited as the main rationale.

Cost savings ahead of fiscal year-end may also be a factor, though Microsoft has not framed it that way publicly.

Claude models are expected to remain available through Copilot CLI, and Microsoft’s broader relationship with Anthropic is said to be unchanged.
