Hektoria Glacier Collapse Reveals How Fast Antarctica Can Fall Apart

Hektoria Glacier on the Antarctic Peninsula collapsed at record speed after losing sea-ice and floating-ice support.

Researchers say it retreated about 25 kilometers from January 2022 to March 2023, including more than 8 kilometers in just two months.

The collapse followed the earlier breakup of the Larsen B ice shelf, which helped remove stabilizing support for the glacier.

The finding suggests Antarctic glaciers can destabilize much faster than expected, raising concern about faster sea-level rise if larger glaciers fail.
