Chinese Scientists Bioengineer Plants With Firefly Genes to Glow for Nighttime Lighting

Chinese scientists used firefly and fungal genes to create more than 20 species of glowing plants.

Magicpen Bio said the modified plants could be used for cultural tourism and to light urban areas at night.

Researchers also noted prior and alternative approaches, including Light Bio’s 2024 Firefly Petunia and nanoparticle-treated succulents.

Developers claim the plants need only water and fertilizer, and do not require electricity, potentially reducing energy use.
