US nuclear firm advances 4th-gen 45 MWth Kronos modular reactor with key clearance

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission accepted NANO Nuclear’s construction permit application for its KRONOS micro modular reactor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

The acceptance starts the formal safety and environmental review, moving the Generation IV reactor closer to deployment.

NANO Nuclear expects the review to finish in 2027 and hopes to begin campus construction in the second half of that year.

The company says KRONOS could help supply advanced nuclear power for data centers, industry, and other large electricity users.
