Base Stations to Serve as "Bear Watchers": Docomo Conducts Pilot Test in Hokkaido to Detect Bear Sightings with AI Cameras

NTT Docomo has launched a proof-of-concept in Hokkaido using AI-linked surveillance cameras at two base stations to detect bear appearances in real time.

The system analyzes video footage from cameras at the Yamate and Shirakawa base stations, with the trial running through November 30.

Beyond detection, Docomo is considering mapping bear locations, notifying relevant agencies, and triggering warning sounds as part of a full system.

If successful, the approach could offer a low-cost way to monitor wildlife in rural areas and strengthen early response to bear damage.
