More than half of the ‘unicorn companies’ in the AI field have never published a peer-reviewed paper or preprint

A Stanford team examined 317 AI unicorns and found that more than half had no peer-reviewed papers or preprints with a listed first or last author.

Academic output was concentrated in a small group of companies, with OpenAI accounting for a large share of citations.

The findings raise questions about verification and transparency, as AI firms tout innovation while contributing little to the scientific literature.
