New piano-playing robotic hand learns notes after just two minutes of practice

Researchers built a four-fingered robotic hand that learned to play a new 30-note piano melody by ear after just two minutes of trial-and-error training.

The system used motor babbling to map finger movements to sounds, then reproduced the unfamiliar tune on its first attempt.

The work, from USC Viterbi and published in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface, highlights perceptual robotics in action.

The approach could inform adaptive assistive devices such as exoskeletons and rehabilitation tools for people with changing needs, including Parkinson’s disease and stroke recovery.
