The US Government Will Ask Data Centers How Much Power They Use

The US Energy Information Administration plans pilot data-center energy surveys in several regions before launching a mandatory nationwide survey.

The survey will collect data on electricity use, on-site power generation, cooling, facility size, and efficiency metrics.

Lawmakers say the first official national dataset could help gauge impacts on power rates, grid planning, pollution, and climate policy.

Regions under study include Texas, Washington state, and the northern Virginia/DC metro area, where data-center growth is especially rapid.
