University of Córdoba researchers built MAPLID, a multi-label model that uses anonymized mobile network metadata and map data to identify how places are used over time.

The team combined call and message antenna connections with OpenStreetMap data to map urban functions and movement patterns without tracking individuals.

MAPLID was successfully tested in Milan and Trento, showing promise for traffic planning, transit analysis, and other city services.

The study was published in the International Journal of Geographical Information Science.
