China announces CPU-only exascale supercomputer with 47,000 homemade processors, record 2 Exaflops of performance without GPUs — Lingshen super said to use Huawei Kunpeng servers and no foreign-made components

Shenzhen’s supercomputing center unveiled plans for Lingshen, a CPU-only exascale system built in two phases.

The project claims more than 2 exaflops of sustained performance using about 47,000 domestically sourced processors and no GPUs.

The design is said to rely on local hardware such as Huawei Kunpeng and other Arm/x86 parts, but the system has not been built and the claims are unverified.

If completed, Lingshen would be a rare exascale machine made without foreign hardware, underscoring China’s push for semiconductor self-reliance.
