Audiology Study Uses Realistic Ambient Soundscapes to Treat Hearing Loss

Western University researchers used an AudioDome and VR audio to study how the auditory cortex builds 3D sound space.

They found the brain appears to filter sound cues in sequence to process elevation, direction, and distance.

The work sheds light on key localization cues such as HRTF, interaural time differences, and interaural level differences.

The findings could help improve hearing aids and cochlear implants so users better locate sounds and follow speech in noisy environments.
