Mystery GPS jammer in Iran becomes test for NASA satellites’ capabilities

NASA’s CYGNSS and NISAR satellites were able to estimate the location of a GPS jammer in Iran within several kilometers.

CYGNSS detected the jammer by measuring its effect on reflected GPS signals, while NISAR spotted the emissions directly in radar data.

Experts say the method is not real-time or pinpoint accurate, but it could still reveal GPS interference hotspots.

That could help airlines and shipping operators avoid areas where navigation signals are being jammed.
