World’s first ammonia-powered ship runs without oil, targets zero-carbon shipping

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries says it completed what it calls the world's first ammonia-powered vessel.

The company held a naming ceremony for the ship on April 9.

The vessel runs entirely on ammonia fuel and does not use oil.

Ammonia contains no carbon, so the ship can operate without emitting carbon dioxide.

Ammonia is already widely produced for fertilizers, but ports need upgrades for safe storage and handling.
