Researchers reported that formoterol, a common asthma and COPD drug, reversed fatty liver injury in mouse models of MASH.

Observational human data also linked formoterol use to fewer severe liver outcomes, including cirrhosis.

The drug may work by boosting mitochondrial biogenesis and improving metabolic function in the liver.

Because formoterol is already widely used and has a known safety profile, it is now headed for clinical testing as a repurposed MASH therapy.
