New plasma-powered rocket design could make solid motors restartable

Aerospace Corporation, USC, and the Naval Postgraduate School are developing a proof-of-concept restartable solid rocket motor.

The approach uses nanosecond pulsed plasma discharge to give solid propulsion more precise control and restart capability.

If successful, it could combine the simplicity and high thrust of solid motors with greater in-flight flexibility for spacecraft and satellites.
