India Won't Require Apple to Preinstall Government ID App on iPhones

India’s IT ministry will not force Apple and other smartphone makers to preinstall the state-backed Aadhaar identity app on new devices.

The decision followed consultations with industry stakeholders; Apple had opposed mandatory preloading over privacy and security concerns.

It avoids a major fight over device software control and limits the spread of the government ID app on consumer phones.
