Digital Agency releases Government AI "Genai" as open source

Japan’s Digital Agency has open-sourced parts of its government AI platform, Gennai, including the web UI, setup steps, and AI app templates.

The move is aimed at expanding use ahead of a large-scale pilot in fiscal 2026.

By making the base platform reusable, ministries and local governments can avoid duplicate development and reduce vendor lock-in.

The release may also encourage derivative development by private-sector partners and cloud vendors such as AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud.
