US: Onboard neural network guides satellite, reducing the need for ground control

The Air Force Research Laboratory flew a satellite with an onboard reinforcement-learning neural network that autonomously controlled spacecraft orientation.

The AI reached its target within one orbit while avoiding hazardous conditions.

The demonstration shows AI can move from lab tests to real spacecraft control and reduce reliance on ground commands.

It also tested an AI watchdog and runtime-assurance guardrails in shadow mode to validate safety.
