The leading contender for next-generation Suica: experience a UWB walk-through gate that requires no tapping

JR East showcased a UWB-powered walk-through gate at Takanawa Gateway, letting users pass without tapping a Suica card.

The demo uses UWB-enabled smartphones and is aimed at making ticket gates fully touchless and faster.

JR East plans to introduce the system at Takanawa Gateway and Oimachi stations in spring 2027.

The company also signaled it may expand trials to more stations in the future, as part of Suica’s next evolution.
