Donating the Model Context Protocol and establishing the Agentic AI Foundation

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) has been donated to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF), a directed fund under the Linux Foundation.

AAIF was co‑founded by Anthropic, Block, and OpenAI and is supported by Google, Microsoft, AWS, Cloudflare, and Bloomberg; the Linux Foundation is a non‑profit that maintains vendor neutrality.

MCP is a universal, open standard for connecting AI applications to external systems, with over 10,000 active public MCP servers and adoption by ChatGPT, Cursor, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Visual Studio Code.

Infrastructure support exists from AWS, Cloudflare, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure; Claude now has a directory of 75+ MCP‑powered connectors.

The MCP ecosystem includes Tool Search and programmatic tool‑calling in the API, official SDKs for major languages with 97M+ monthly downloads (Python and TypeScript), the November 25th spec additions (asynchronous operations, statelessness, server identity, official extensions), and MCP remains open‑source, community‑driven, and vendor‑neutral.
