Scientists found the crust beneath Kenya and Ethiopia’s Turkana Rift is far thinner than expected.

The results show advanced rifting between the African and Somali plates, pointing toward eventual continental breakup and a new ocean basin.

The study also connects this tectonic history to the basin conditions that preserved some of the earliest human fossils.
