Severe UTIs May Be an Overlooked Dementia Risk Factor

A study from the University of Helsinki links severe infections, especially urinary tract infections (UTIs), to a higher dementia risk.

Researchers analyzed data from over 62,000 dementia patients and found a significant association with severe infections independent of other diseases.

UTIs were linked to a 19% greater risk of developing dementia, suggesting infection prevention might help reduce this risk.

The inflammation from severe infections may accelerate pre-existing dementia processes rather than initiate neurodegeneration.

The study highlights the need for further research to determine if preventing these infections can benefit dementia prevention.
